When publishing an Instagram post in Vista Social with collaborators, you may notice that some invites are not successful. This can happen even when the account appears completely normal (public, active, and unrestricted).
Such failure can be caused by the user’s account settings or Instagram’s own privacy and safety restrictions. Learn more by reading towards the end of this guide.
Main reasons Instagram collab invites fail
1. The user has collaboration invites turned off
Instagram allows users to manually control who can invite them to collaborate. If this setting is disabled, you will not be able to tag them as a collaborator, even if their profile is public and you can normally tag or mention them.
There is no way for Vista Social (or any third-party tool) to detect this setting beforehand. Instagram’s Graph API does not provide access to the "collaboration invites" preference.
2. The user is using a private account
If the collaborator’s account is set to private, Instagram will not allow collaboration invites. This applies even if the accounts follow each other.
3. Other possible Instagram user settings restricting collaboration
Certain settings can block collab invites, such as:
Restricted account
Age-related limitations
Safety or security flags applied by Instagram
These settings are not exposed in Instagram’s API.
How Vista Social helps identify collab issues
To make the issue clear during publishing, Vista Social automatically highlights collaborator problems.
Collaborators who could not be invited will appear in red
Status displayed: “Unable to invite due to user settings”
This indicates that the issue is caused by the collaborator’s Instagram account settings.
What to tell collaborators
If a collaborator is not receiving an invite/cannot be invited, ask them to check:

Instagram settings → Notifications → Push notifications → Collaboration invites → Set to “On”
Ensure their account is set to public
Remove or adjust restrictions or privacy limitations that may block invites
Once the settings are corrected, collaboration invites should work normally.
