TikTok DM Automations allows you to automatically respond to incoming direct messages (DMs) from followers. This can help manage high volumes of inquiries, send timely content, and engage users at scale.

Platform requirements & limitations

• Eligible Accounts: Only TikTok Business Accounts can access DM automation features.
• Regional Restrictions: Not available to accounts based in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the UK.
• DM Content Support:
  • Text-only DMs are supported universally.
  • Image attachments are not supported in the US.
  • Links are not clickable in DMs, but plain text URLs can be included.
• API Limitations:
  • It is not currently possible to send DMs to users who have not previously messaged your account.

  • Comment on a post: Automation can be triggered when a user comments on a post.

How to set up TikTok DM automation

1. Connect Your TikTok Business Account: Ensure your account is properly connected and authorized.
2. Navigate to Automations: Go to the automations dashboard to set up an automation.
3. Create a New Automation: Select a TikTok profile and choose any DM keywords to trigger this automation.
4. Define Your Response: Enter the message you want to send automatically.
5. Activate the Automation: Save and enable the automation to go live.

Q: Why can’t I send messages to new followers?
A: TikTok's API does not allow initiating conversations with users who haven't messaged your account first.

Q: Why aren't my image messages sending?
A: Image support varies by region; it is currently not available in the US.

Q: Can I include links in my automated messages?
A: You can include URLs as text, but they won't be clickable.

Q: Is comment-triggered automation available?
A: No, TikTok's API does not currently support comment-based triggers.

Q: Can I set up DM automation for ads or dark posts?

A: No. DM automation is only supported for regular and organic boosted posts. It is not available for paid ads or dark posts due to API limitations.

Q: Can I set up multiple actions and triggers?

A: Yes! During the automation setup, all you have to do is click Add another trigger/action as many times as you want.

Q: Can I filter out non-followers in Automations?
A: Yes! During setup, just select "Yes" under the Followers only dropdown.
