How to create an agent that runs other agents

An orchestrator agent is an agent whose job is to run your other agents. You give it a team of agents, a schedule, and instructions, and it runs the whole team for you and brings the results back together. For example, one orchestrator can run your morning briefer and your weekly performance reporter every Monday, then send you a single summary.

 

What this does

  • Runs a team of your existing agents every time it runs
  • Runs on its own schedule, so the whole team works without you starting each agent
  • Follows a brief that tells it what to do with the combined results
  • Can be run right away from chat, not only on its schedule

 

How to create an orchestrator agent

  1. Press X on your keyboard to open Ask Vista and start a new chat
  2. Describe which agents to run, when, and what to do with the results, for example: "Create an agent that runs Antoine and Enzo every Monday at 9 AM and summarizes their results"
  3. Ask Vista finds the agents and shows a summary of the new agent's schedule and team
  4. Confirm to create the agent

Ask Vista creates the orchestrator, gives it its own name and avatar, and adds it to your Agents list. The agents you named become its team.

  • "Create an agent that runs Mira and Mei every weekday at 7 AM"
  • "Create an agent that runs Owen and Cara every Monday morning and flags any profile with nothing scheduled"
  • "Create an agent that runs Arjun and Declan every Friday at 4 PM, then sends me one combined recap"

 

Understanding the orchestrator's settings

Open the orchestrator from your Agents list and click the Settings tab.

  • Persona: the name and avatar shown in your agent library, the chat sidebar, and notifications. Click Change to swap them.
  • Role: a one-line tagline shown under the name, for example "Your results summarizer"
  • Schedule: when the orchestrator runs, for example "Every Monday at 9:00 AM"
  • Team: the agents it runs every time it runs. To add or remove agents, ask in chat.
  • Brief (markdown): the instructions the orchestrator follows, for example "Run both Mira and Arjun and summarize their results." Click the edit icon, or click the brief, to change it.
  • Configured with: the profiles the agent works with

The top of the page shows the agent's status (for example Active) and the estimated time it saves each month. Use the Activity tab to see what the agent has done, and Chat with [agent name] to talk to it directly.

At the bottom of the page:

  • Save: saves your changes to the settings
  • Pause: stops the orchestrator from running on its schedule until you turn it back on
  • Share: shares the agent
  • Delete: removes the orchestrator

 

How an orchestrator runs

  • On its schedule, the orchestrator starts every agent on its team
  • Team agents run in parallel, so one can finish before another
  • When they're all done, the orchestrator follows its brief, for example by summarizing the results
  • To run it right away, ask Ask Vista in chat, for example: "Run [agent name]"

An orchestrator runs every agent on its team, including agents that schedule posts or send emails. Check what each agent does before you add it to a team.

 

Best practices

  • Group agents that share a goal, like your morning briefer and pre-flight checker, into one orchestrator
  • Run a new orchestrator once from chat before its first scheduled run, so you can check the results
  • Use the Brief to say exactly what to do with the combined results, like "summarize their results in one message"
  • Use agent names exactly as they appear in your Agents list so Ask Vista finds the right ones
  • Give the orchestrator a Role that describes its job, so it's easy to spot in your agent library
